Emily L. Burks focuses her practice primarily on employment law and real estate transactions. Emily has extensive experience advising small and large companies on the many aspects of employment law such as the hiring and firing of employees, review and drafting of company contracts and employee handbooks, classification of employees, and counseling related to discrimination claims. Emily represents individuals in the negotiation and review of employment and independent contractor agreements, severance packages and benefits analysis.

Emily has also represented buyers and sellers in the negotiation and leasing of commercial real estate, drafting of condominium and homeowners association documents, filing of eviction proceedings and counseling with respect to all aspects of real estate financing transactions.

Having worked for a women’s financial empowerment start-up company and served on the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business MBA program’s admissions committee for the past two years, Emily’s legal counsel is tailored to accommodate the realities and obstacles facing many businesses today.

Emily obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1999 and her Juris Doctor from University of California Los Angeles in 2002. Upon graduation from UCLA, Emily worked in Los Angeles and San Francisco advising large corporate clients on, among other things, state and federal wage and hour requirements in the employment context, disability law, and review of retail commercial leases and maintenance of landlord tenant relationships. Emily’s legal counseling also benefits from having practiced in a small town in Maine where she advised small businesses and individuals on business formation, real estate transactions, domestic law and estate planning. Emily is heavily involved with initiatives focused on the empowerment of women and girls. She presents to women’s groups on the necessity of basic estate planning and financial literacy with the ultimate goal of promoting and empowering women, their networks and supportive business relationships.
